John Digby, first Earl of Bristol

 

This portrait of John Digby (1580-1653/4) by Cornelius Johnson (1593-1661) was painted in 1628. Married to Beatrice Walcott in 1609 and father of George Digby, he was ambassador to the Spanish Court from 1611-24. He was created Earl in 1622. After the defeat of King Charles, he moved to Paris, where he died before he could witness the Restoration.
