Lords John and Bernard Stuart

One of the more resplendent and archetypically 'Cavalier' images of the Caroline Court, the double portrait by Van Dyck was painted around 1638. Younger brothers of Lord George d’Aubigny (1618-42), Lady Catherine's husband, the two lords shared his sad fate in war. John (1622-44) died of his wounds after the battle of Cheriton (as mentioned in The Licence of War), while Bernard (1623-45) perished from his injuries at the battle of Rowton Heath.
